Scientific Names

Hey,

Just been looking at Roy Pails site and noticed that he lists some reptiles with different scientific names to what NSW NPWS do on their species list. Have the names recently been reclassified or is he using older names?

Cheers.

So would NPWS use the currently "accepted" names in use by the general scientific community? Or is there no such thing and you never know what someone might call a particular species.

I just imported a water python and SA placed Bothrochilus fuscus on the import form.

Bothrochilus, liasis etc etc as Roy uses on his site are "old school" names. As a GTP is known as Morelia viridis and no longer as chondropython. But ppl still use the term chondro to describe GTP's.

I had someone call me a few days ago saying that I'd sold her a snake under the wrong name. She was convinced the Morelia spilota variegata I had sold her was a M.s.mcdowelli. I told her it was, but writing down variegata was the right thing to do for the records... this conversation lasted a while.

Pails uses an obsolete name. As Sxe says, its a matter of opinion.
the problem is that opinion should be on provable data and not personel preference.
I personally like the old old system Monoherpus allintogetherous.
That was it. no other species.

Why was this the right thing to do? I sent in for an import license to get two coastals (mcdowelli) imported from SA, NSW NPWS listed the species as Morelia s. mcdowelli on the import license they sent me and I also wrote that into my record book.

Thanks to everyone for clarifying that for me, I am sure it will come in handy to know this further down the track.

Cheers.

That is why some things about how our hobby is managed are so stupid, there should be one universal way to run things, either ours or yours at least it would make sense.

Cheers.

I believe Roy Pails uses the name he does because that is how these animals are listed by the DSE in Victoria, the State in which he resides and which issues his License.

What it does is takes olivaceus and fuscus/mackloti and separates them in to different genus. From a lay perspective it seems reasonable to some degree but I'm no scientist.
Then again Ive had childreni that look like miniature olives. so maybe I should give Antaresia the boot.
