is it safe to feed snakes garden skinks that have been frozen to stop all parasites? or is it just to risky? also how long should you freez the skinks for if its ok. Or is it best to breed your own skinks for feeding purposes.
cheers steve |

I'm not totally sure on this one.
Someone on here said that if you freeze them for around a (month?) I think. That'll get rid of any parasites that the skink might have.. Are these skinks that you're planning on feeding, actually allowed to be fed? (legally)

To my knowledge its fine if you freeze them for six weeks. I think it is actually illegal in most states though.
What did you want them for?

You are allowed to catch them for food if your snake wont eat anything else and it is recomended to freeze for 4 to 6 weeks. Saying this if your snake eats other food ie mice, rats etc then you cant catch the skinks for food. As for breeding them for food wellllllll dont know if you can even do this legally and you would have to get the pair/s checked out for disease and parasites, then treat them for any of these they might have so as to not pass it on to the offspring or even your other herps. Is it really worth it???

Just be careful, I froze some (not for six weeks though) and not long after I fed one to a hatchling childrens it died. I'm pretty sure that the lizard was the cause although I can't be 100% sure. I also had a vitticeps that got pretty crook after it ate a skink one day. I think if you can stick to other methods of getting your hatchling pythons to feed such as braining a pinky or assist feeding them you would be better off.

you really don't need to use skins at all, and I wouldn't take the riks. They say just feed them the tail as it has less parisites in it. Although you don't need to, if your snake dosn't look like it's going to take to a frozen mouse or rat then use live (if it's not eating), just be persistant it does take time, your snake will go ages without eating and then all of a sudden will take one so don't panic, worst case senario assist/force feed. I found that one of my bub coastals just would not eat, thought I had tried everything. So I ended up using a bub rat that just got fur and moving around a lot more, let it run around his cage to get him half interested (he's not a striker) and then picked it up again and then just rubbed it ever so slightly up his back then droped it on him and he instantly coiled it, then got excited about doing this then ate it (the rat was live but he killed it before eating). I had tried this before and it hadn't worked, so I guess the timing was just right (so dont' give in to skinks, you really don't need them and there more trouble then it's worth IMO).
