Sterilisation

Is it possible to sterilise a snake? By this i mean render it infertile

Possible? I don't see why not.

Whether it's been done before--why would you want to?--I have no idea.

Keep it warm in winter - that does the trick. You could do surgery and remove the reproductive system, but keeping warm is much nicer and cheaper.

A vet probably could. Or are you talking about doing it at home. "your not going to perform the operation by yourself"

Some snakes reproduce even if kept warm.

Yeah, I guess northern species would reproduce when warm over winter. My Antaresia are very susceptible to the thermal form of birth control, so I've never worried about it much.

I would never try something like this at home, I would get a reptile vet to do it, i'm not stupid. I wanted to see if it was possible, as i have written am email to the WA parks people begging to see if i can take ari and virgil if they are unable to breed. I was hoping there was a less invasive way than surgery, but if thats what it takes then i'd do it

Not always a joke - I desexed my pet rabbit! People are always shocked when I tell them that, but then I have to admit that I am trained in animal surgery and did this properly in an animal operating room at a university.

Jen,

I think disease is more of a concern for animals coming into WA.
unfortunately i dont think its at all possible for a vet to clear a snake
of all possible diseases or virus (like Ophidian Paramixovirus).
