strange biting

Hey,

I finally found a female for my male spotted python... She's 5yrs old, gorgeous... i was just holding her and she was crawling through my shirt and when she got to my armpit she opened her mouth and tried to latch on... i pulled her away and she went bak and started to try doing it again??? any ideas??? Also, my boy has recently gone to the vet and he's all healthy etc no mites... When i picked her up she was being caged with another spotted python... has been for a while so does that mean she would be healthy as well considering they're both still living after being together for a few years? or should i get her checked by the vet before introducing them together?

Its just like a gentle bite yeah? Not striking? My spotted done this to my fingers a few times, he would rub and nudge his nose against my finger and then just open up and bite on lol. I guess he thought my fingers felt like little mice, so i started feeding him a little more to see if it was him being hungry and he stopped doing it.

It's always a good idea to quarantine any new acquisitions to prevent the spread of mites, RI etc. Six months is a good time frame and ensure they are kept in seperate rooms with different handling tools etc.

It's a pain to do, but it's definitely worthwhile in the long run.

The vet can't be sure from looking at a snake in 5 mins. He can get a general idea of its health, but some symptoms can take months to present themselves. That's why most countries quarantine any animals coming in from another country for 3, 6 and even 12 months at a time.

the vet cant see or test for OPMV and early onset of ri,s so quarantine
for at least 6 months to be safe

OPMV??? sorry im still gettin used to all the abbreviations everyone uses here... yeah i've got her in a separate container... gonna use the quaratine time to feed her up a bit and to start the cooling processes so if nothing comes up by 6 months then i'll see if i can still get her in for breeding this year...

Check out the sticky threds on here it will jolt you into reality as far as the need for quarantine especially
OPMV!,
Keeping them in seperate containers is paramount for the quarantine process as is washing after handling
each snake and keeping the equipment of each snake seperate as well.
The cooling process will slow any signs of most relevant deseases and could cause probs when you start to
bring the temps back up, hence the need for at least a 6 month quarantine period!

5potted - As Beeman has said, read the sticky for OPMV (Ophidian Paramyxovirus) it is the biggest concern in the hobby today in regards to health...

Put simply, if your animal has it, it will die. Problem is it can't be diagnosed until after death and once visible symptoms start showing there is usually little time left for the snake. If your other snakes are exposed to the virus they are very likely to become affected as well...as you can see, has a strong ability to wipe out a collection...

That is why quarantine is so important - symptoms can be hidden for the best part of year....
