Hi all, looking at getting a python over the next few weeks and well I have a few "stupid" questions.... 1 With having the snake in a plastic tub and a heat mat what temp do I need to set the mat at?? 2 with a thermostat does it just turn off the heat mat once it gets to the right temp and then turns back one once it gets too cold??3 How often do I feed my snake?? I know there are probably heaps of threads for these questions but my comp is playing up and is only allowing me to look at a few things not all of it... like wiki... which sucks!!!please help |

Her enclosure temps are as follows Hot end substrate temp 27 to 30 c. Cold end substrate temp 24 to 26 c. in middle of enclosure air temp between 26 and 31 c. I have 2 heat globes which are 60 watt purple night lites, using a heat mat is fine at one end, measure the substrate temp(floor temp) at the hot end and dont let it get over say 32 c or below say 26 c. this should allow a fair gradient for a small click clack container to start with. My advice would be find a reputable breeder and ask lots of Questions.Good luck |

I'm just soooo nervous of killing or hurting a snake if i do something wrong... My husband is going to do the tub with the glass doors at the front so my son can still see him... |

They are beautiful snakes and most of them have great temperaments. I mean, if your buying a hatchie it won't grow to its full size in a couple of months, it will be adult size in 3-4 yrs in which time you will be used to it. And if your getting reptiles - you'll be hooked! You just have to KEEP getting more...so you'll probably end up with a coastal in the end anyway. Stimpsons and spotteds are both nice snakes as well they (also) have a great temperment (mostly). Not sure if you know this allready but anyway, when buying your snake - ask to handle it, choose a snake with a good temperment and that has a good feeding record. (by good i mean not to many refused feeds)

Would also suggest a twin prong thermometer to check temps.
Some thermostats turn off some dim down and then increase as needed. I would suggest a dimmer style so you will not have to buy another later on for the larger enclosure.
Snake ranch are very good breeders, good choice. ask as many questions as possible.
There are no stupid questions!!!

Leezal has asked a serious question, pointed out that she is very new and that kind of 'advice' could be taken as serious by her.
Leezal, I have a young (about 3 months old) Spotted at the moment, I am feeding her every 7 days on a fuzzy mouse. ( A fuzzy mouse is a baby mouse that has just grown hair, as opposed to the younger 'pinky' mice with no hair). Prior to this she was eating pinky mice up until about 2 months of age, just depends on the snake size.
Cracksinthepitch advice on temps is pretty well on the money. I have my girl in a click-clack (pic below is of a slightly bigger one, but gives you the idea) which sits on top of another enclosure so the radiant heat from it warms one end of the click-clack. The floor temp at the 'hot' end is about 32c and about 27c at the other end.
Be sure to give your snake clean water, something to climb on and something to hide in and keep the enclosure clean.
Finally when you get your snake, give it about 2 weeks to settle, so resist the temptation to handle during this time. I would try offering it a feed after a few days. but make the feeding as lest stressful as you can, put the pinky in front of its nose and it should just take it from you, if not leave the pinky in the enclosure for a few hours and check later to see if it has been eaten, if not remove it and discard it, and try again in a few days.
Your question isn't a stupid one, keep them coming if you have anymore
All the best.

Your soon to be new snake's digestive system cannot handle that kind of feeding regimen! Snakes eat a big meal then require several days to digest. When a snake takes a big poop, it is then ready to have another feed. Could be 3 days from feed to poop, could be 2 weeks. Point is, thats how I've been advised to feed my snakes by keepers with decades of experience behind them. Good luck!

All the best Leezel.
