I've been playing around with a couple of female rats a friend gave me some weeks ago.
They were born on 6 July 06 and yesterday and today dropped their first litters.
One of 17 and the other of 19, not bad for 11 week old rats, it's just a pity that the bloody things bite.

The last rats I owned was about 2 years ago . The male was 920 grams ( not fat ) and the female was 680 grams and had litter sizes around 24 each time. They were super rats .

Im sorry to put a downer on your topic and true they are excellent sized litters but may I ask why these babies are having babies?I understand you said you hadnt had them long but 11 weeks is way too young.I hope that you dont have the problems of the mothers getting stressed out because of the litter size I am presuming that you are planning on letting the females feed all their young?I strongely advise you to give a third of each litter to an older lactating female if its possible and that way alot of presure is off the females and they young all have a better chance of surviving.IMO
Cheers Odie

"why are these babies having babies"
I'm really not sure, maybe it has something to do with hormones or maybe it's just a case of there being a male in with 2 females. Who knows what rats get up to when you are not looking.
I was given 8 in July as 4 day old babies, I put them on another feeding mum, 5 got chomped and the other 3 survived and did their thing.
I'm not sure how the mums will go with feeding such big litters, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Isnt that a clever comment??explains it all really You knew you had a male with 2 females and you knew their ages,do you think you have done the right thing by breeding females under 3months old???????
Nev as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your charges!Of course they will mate from 8 weeks of age onwards,IMO and the opioions of thousands of breeders and vets all over the world you have done the wrong thing!

let us know how the babies turn out. Let us know how many survive and keep us updated as to the mothers lifespan now.

settle down odessastud, take a chill pill. whats done is done. im sure if rats are not ment to breed at 11 weeks, they would'nt be able to fall pregnant in the first place. just pay more attention to the young mothers.

Where/how does the damage occur when breeding rats as soon as they mature. I dont know much about it but i thought the problem was they might have trouble raising them. Is that the only problem or is there more to it?

"Nev as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your charges!"
Anyone else find this ironic? Sorry odessa but after your dog incident I think you should
take a less "Holier than thou" approach.
No hard feeling just MO!

Im not going to enter into any debate on the rights and wrong of nature that would be silly! Im not getting stressed either so the chill pill isnt needed! I was only saying that by the way Nev has explained the situation 3 rats 1m 2f all three sibilings ,he knew they were closely related his choice to breed them, the other concern I had was the age of the females,I commended him for his litter size I only stated facts and offered friendly advise in my first reply.I then got a cheeky answer back and some more information so replied with no malice implied I just reminded Nev of his commitment to his charges.
""Im sure if rats are not ment to breed at 11 weeks, they would'nt be able to fall pregnant in the first place"".
That comment opens up a whole new topic alone, many species including us mere mortals are able to reproduce at a very young age! It doesnt make it right nor in the best intrest of the female involved. JMO please dont take offence Nev Im offering advise about a subject Im passionate about, and If i came across as obnoxious I appologise. :
Cheers Odie and good luck with your ratties.
