Aslan said to go ahead, my 4 mnth old Atherton would handle it, and whatta ya know? He was right. It took the snake a while to take the rat (I gather it smelt different) but after I annoyed him with it for a while, he struck and then ate it in a relatively short amount of time. Unfortunately he wouldn't pose for the photo and the bump does not show really well. The final photo was him about to eat me or the camera - he obviously wanted more!!
So Aslan, thanks for the advice. Getting the go-ahead from someone who knows more about snakes than me, made it a lot less stressful! Thanks.

...Good to get them on to Rats when they're young - saves any hassle later down the line...
...don't be afraid to try larger sizes - if he can't eat it, he won't...

It really freaked me out. Obviously he was fine, but now I tend to air on the side of caution (or I'm just a big chicken - one or the other.)
