It is not so much mating, they can do that for months - but female ovulation, from there still a variable time to the pre-lay shed, from there it can be measured to a few days range til egg laying. (Roughly 25 days)
Roughly 60 days incubation. Species vary so do some more research for the specific breed.
There ya go - snake breeding in one paragraph
Cheers
Adam.

Southern Cross Reptiles has excellent articles regarding breeding pythons. Check them out. They are really good.

As Ad mentioned, the amount of time snakes mate has no bearing on when eggs are layed...
BHPs for example;
Males are introduced into the females enclosures. Matings take place and sufficient night time 'cooling' is applied. Through stimulation (reflective seasonal temps/reflective photo-period, mating activity, male combat/shed skin scenting etc) the female will ovulate. Ovulation lasts around 24hrs, a pre-lay shed is had 21-22days after ovulation and deposition of eggs takes place 28-32 days later. Eggs hatch 55-60days @31.8deg.
The above example is given through our experience. Not all keepers incubate at the same temp so incubation times may vary. Also, if higher or lower temps are given at the 'basking end' the time from shed to deposition of eggs may differ.

bhps can breed alot earlier than 5 years, they can be mated at 18 months with eggs hatching at 2yrs, but i perfer to let them go the extra year and mate them at 2 1/2yrs with their first clutch of eggs hatching at 3yrs of age.
