The drought must be taking it's toll on snakes in the bush.
Yesterday I was asked to remove a coastal carpet from a house across the road.
It was between 5 and 6 feet long, quite placid, with a real big head but very skinny.
Skinny to the stage of having lots of loose skin and the belly was totally empty.
I gave it 3 large rats, yum, yum, yes please, and took it down to the local creek to release.

Hmmm i would have thought the snakes would benefit from it eating all the dying animals etc....wonder why it was so thin?

the drought mean that there is no feed for rodents and other snake food. with no food for the rodents theres no food for snakes. its a vicious cycle. its just like when we do have plenty of rain and rodents meet plague proportion the population of snakes also increases.

Come to think of it... I used to do a bit of canooeing in the NP, and I'd often come across a rbb going for a bit of a swim. But I haven't seen one in a while lately, a little odd.
Good on you, The Devil, for helping out that coastal.

Well done with the coastal mate. Where I live there are two areas local that you used to be able to go to and were guaranteed to find tiger snakes in one area and RBBS in the other. The area where tiger snakes were was a swamp and people drive through it heaps and the story went tat if you stopped and got out of the car you were going to stand on a tiger snake there was that many of them there. I went out there last summer...couldn't find a single tigersnake. The area full of RBBS is still full, but much the same as the coastal, decent size snakes, about 4ft but so skinny. Skin just rolled over itself, it's such a pitty. Poor things.
