"Training" pythons to be better pythons...

My baby BHP has the most gentle demeanor., however, this also applies to his feeding. He barely strikes and doesn't constrict. He has no problems eating (thawed rats) but has anyone ever got a gentle snake like that to act more like the killing machine he was born to be? Is it even a problem given that he eats thawed rats and doesn't need to constrict?

Of course it's not a problem , & the 'killing machine' concept is a bit sideways IMO .

Lots of people out there would probably love to have a snake like yours, it has no problem feeding so it's fine.

I have one mac like that, it nudges its food item, them slowly "walks" it down its throat.

The other one will kill anything that gets within a 30cm radius of its head!

Once it has hold of the rat just give it (the rat) a bit of a shake, that will cause the snake to constrict.

I was going to start athread on my BHP for similar reasons. He will NOT strike at a thawed rabbit and i thought it was weird but was told its fairly normal for them...THEN i put a thawed rat in there, just sat it on his hide as i did with the rabbits and he striked at it from half way across his enclosure, scared the crap out of me when he did it too because i wasnt expecting that. did that to a couple of rats then the next rabbit he wouldnt strike at.

You can also try bumping the snake along the sides of it's body, using the rodent. This may cause the snake to push the rodent against the sides of the enclosure and suffocate it that way, much the way they kill prey down in burrows.

Like everyone has said, there's no problem what so ever.

My Woma's don't constrict their food either, however they'll strike at it and then smash the thawed out rodends body against the wall of the feeding tub. I guess this is a different way to kill their prey item?

My adult female Stimson Python doesn't even strike at the rat, or even coil it. I've found that to get her to eat, you have to place it in her feeding tub, and then put a cover over the tub so it's dark, then she'll eat it 10 minutes or so later.

She's so placid that you can even pick her up once she's finished eating and she doesn't care, My other snakes on the other hand, if you tryed to do that with them, they'd think they were getting seconds lol.

My black headed sometimes goes nuts and sometimes is just a lazy eater but she eats without any problem, just depends on her mood I guess. My bredli and carpet are the same, sometimes strike sometimes not, sometimes constrictes and sometimes not.But if I shake the rat, they constrict pretty quick.

LOL..As long as it's eating it's all good!
I have a jungle that gently grabs the rat, doesn't constrict, (it does occasionally) then swallows it's prey.
it actually looks kinda weird, compared to the norm, but that's how it eats...

They wont constrict it if they know its dead

Also to get your snakes to more readily eat a thawed meal, heat it up to body temperature and try wiggling him around infront of the snake, he will strike for sure.
