You want to try and train your snake ????? "instinct" ?????
Cool, I want to train my cat to land on it's feet when chucked in the air lol.

But seriously, snakes sense more than just smell & taste.
They also sense heart beat, breathing, body temp and other litle factors that indicate whether their prey item is alive or dead. I garuntee if you threw a live rodent in there it will "instinctively" constrict the prey item. And before I get flamed let me make it clear *I do not recomend or condone live feeding*

My Blonde mac does that aswell she cruises over and smells it and will sometimes slowly grab it from the feeding tongs or otherwise i have to just leave it in her enclosure and she wil work out where the head is coil around it to hold it and mung down lol. I have never in the time i have had her seen her strike at food, nor me.

Some snakes will do this, not exactly sure why though. I would imagine it has something to do with the snake knowing it is dead(most seem to still constrict dead stuff). 2 of my macs will always eat chicken necks in a very docile fashion without constricting yet will smash a thawed rodent without thinking.

i had the same concern for the first month but then i started thawing the rats/mice in a plastic bag in boiling water now charleze goes spako quite often missing the rat altogether and striking like a brown snake (rapid fire) even if i just place the warm rat on the floor or in a tub she still stalks it then strikes (never missus if it aint moveing).

LOL! Having seen that exact scenario in the flesh, i know you're right! Thanks for all the input! Like I said, he has no probs eating, just thought he acted like a bit of a poof whilst doing it. Doesn't bother me in the least but would be a concern down the track if i go to feed him something i bonked on the head and only knocked it out. Cheers and thanks again!

Worked like a charm, thanks Ramsayi.
