Varying snake Food?

I'm curious to hear if anyone varies their snakes food. Mine only alternates between rats & mice but what about birds etc. I keep passing day old chicks at the market and wonder if they'd make a good snack? Are quails any good? I figure they have quite a few bones and would be reasonable in calcium. Have the snakes you fed different thing to get a liking for something different and won't touch anything else after that? Am I better to just stick with the rats and mice and not vary the foods, because continuing with the bird thing would be a mongrel? I'm curious!!

probably get shot feeding frogs to snakes Jimmy! expensive to say the least. Besides, I've got a soft spot for amphibians lol I think quite a few people get their hatchies started on skinks though.

That's true. I sort of like the rats. Find it hard bangin' the little guys on the concrete steps before feeding. It's so very quick, but I still feel like a bit of monster, because on one hand I'm patting them and mucking around with them, and then the next thing the last thing going through the rats mind is my porch. Can't take the risks feeding live ones, not only is it against the regs for reptile keepers, but the rat could really stuff up my snake. So yeah, you got to make a choice.

i catch my own rats and mice and i use humane traps but with these traps i can get bitten very easy so i just put the trap and all in a bucket of water problem solve so u should just weigh them down and put them in a bucket of water it may not be quick but theres no pain

jimmy, drowning is a painfully long way to die mate.... and not very humane, try the spine snap method, pull the tail away from the head....
Also my snake hates the mousey smell being washed off by water.... wont touch them,....

What is the point of catching them alive if you are just going to kill them? Why not use a normal mousetrap in the first place?

i had a water python that ate rats then one day to try something diff i fed her a quail but after that she would not eat a rat unless she had at least one quail before the rat, and was a problem in the end as it was getting expensive specially coz i had to get quail from a pet shop.

Thanks Ricko, that's what I was afraid of. I don't want to start any bad habits because at the moment she's never refused anything. In fact she'd eat way more if I let her.

Don't be turned off day old chicks moosenoose. We regularly vary our bhp's food. Usually it is a chick or two and then rat / mouse to end the one meal. We do feed more rats / mice than chicks so some meals they only get rodents. But so far no problems. The great thing with chicks though is that they are insanely cheap. We can get 100 day old cockrels for $9.95 or 1000 for $30. It is a very cheap way to add a bit of variety.
