Ven Keepers

Looks like I'm about to add a few vens to the collection.

Just a question for current keepers, how many of you bother to inform the local hospital of any exotic vens you are keeping? And what is their typical response if you have?

Thanks

And before anyone has a hissy fit, by exotic I mean locally exotic. So adders in Melbourne for example.

melbourne hospital stocks adder anti-venom so it shouldn't be a problem jp. The zoo's all have adders and there is an abundance of them as pets. Even if they didn't have any ballarat also stocks it.
I never bothered telling my local hospital that I had adders and if I were bit I'd need a quick lift to melbourne, but I sussed out information through an ambo friend. I just sussed out how long it took for the helicopter to get to us and so on.

as a keeper of venomous snakes i think it is important to notify the local hospital if you have snakes that are not imdemic to the area as if you are tagged by 1 they know where to source the correct anti venom as quick as possible .Here in bathurst the local hospital know where to get antivenom for both taipans for in case of
a emergancy as we let them know that we keep them. go with the aders they are great snakes

If you are thinking about needing the chopper, get ambulance cover now. It is NOT cheap.

Lol it was only a joke, I know it isn't cheap. A 5 min ride in an ambo is enough to break the bank let alone a chopper.

My local hospital wasnt interested. If you do happen to be bitten by a species outside your local area, it (antivenom) only takes a few hours to source it from elsewhere. Usually the poly will sort you out till the good stuff arrives.

Last visit I was informed where the different specific antivenoms are retained. They can be transported within a short time to the hospital you are admitted to.
The emergency staff will contact an expert immediately for back up information. It was Julian White in my case.

up here in QLD all our ambulance costs including chopper if needed are covered under our electricity bills we pay so much per bill around $25.00 per bill, so you really dont worry it dont hurt the hip pocket and you are always covered and because this applys to everyone it covers anyone living at your home address........so if you are on your own or have a family of ten everyone is covered by that $25.00 per bill......easy as I think all Australia should do this ...when i lived in NSW the neighbour called an ambo cost their family nearly $2000.00 dollars because the kid had to be taken to WESTMEAD and they lived in BLUE MOUNTAINS and were not in an ambo fund ......we get a bill for electricity every 3 months or so ..............anti ven isnt hard to get at my local hospital......but what i would like to know is I am a cronic sufferer of asthma been in hospital a few times even in the high dependency ward for attacks was wondering wether you think i should carrie an epi pen with me as well as my inhaler for the just in case? ...........i suppose i wont know till i get tagged which believe me i try and hope never to get done but what i do i am at risk so any info on that from ven keepers and asthma would be good thanks.....RBB

RBB

I'm in the same boat as you ( Chronic athsmatic) perhaps a thread on this topic would be good or even a pm sent to toxinologist could answer this.
