If you want to sell more than one clutch per year you need to pay $1000 a year for a breeders license.
|
This I find ridiculous.
You can breed a clutch of say.. imbricata and get 35 babies at $300-500 each. $10,000+ right? similar amounts for a clutch of BHP's or Womas.
Or you can breed a clutch of knob tailed geckos, 2 babies at $150-200 each.
How does that make sense?
You need a breeders licence for one pair of knobbies - they will have 2-6 clutches per year.

There's a big BUT and its a big one- from what I have been told (and this is just what I was told) this is how it works: Example: If I own a pair of BHP's, a pair of imbricata, and a trio of knob talied geckos...and I let them all breed in one year- I can only sell one clutch. So in that case (for me anyway) I would sell the clutch of whatever was going to get me the highest price, then get the breeders license and sell the rest (if thats allowed by the law).
Here in WA- you can pay $5000 for a Woma. I've seen them at around $3000 as well. And at the moment- you're paying $1200+ for a juvenile Imbricata.
Its insane.

Most other states have a "six month" rule to effectively cover this meaning that as a private herper you cannot buy and sell the same animal within six months with the exception of hatchlings and new born herps.
I think you will find that this clause in the legislation in WA is even more of a problem (more insane - to use your words) than the one I orignally raised about the schedules and their maintenance in Victoria.
Talking of cost/profit/accounting the way it is set up in Victoria and I believe in most states is that for most private herps breeding is a break even situation. This is a status quo I am quite happy with. It should not be about profit but that does not mean it has to cost you a lot either. Quote: |

I agree that its not about the money- but because of high reptile prices here, people are discouraged about owning reptiles, and then theres the fact that Dealers are selling wild caught animals and selling them as captive bred.....
One guy told us it was normal for a snake to be snappy, and that his kids had been bitten many many times by snakes and they were perfectly fine (when I expressed that I would like my daughter to handle the snake without constantly being tagged). I don't expect a snake to be perfect, they are wild animals after all- but I do expect some sort of honesty and ability to be able to trust these people who've been given the responsibility to care for and sell reptiles.
And I've experienced first hand some of these people giving bad advice to people- and frankly it scares me- there are people out there with reptiles that are dying and/or sick because of these dufus's- and I don't know about you- but if I pay $500 for something- I expect it to be in good health, and to receive proper information about it from the dealer I buy it from.
The dealers have a responsibility to the public to inform them properly, and thats not being done.
And Imbricata are becoming harder and harder to get here.

Does anyone know of new reptile additions that might be on the vic license at the end of the year?
I heard that dse was getting alot of calls about boyd's.
Hopefully their will be a few additions to both the basic and advanced licenses.
