davegy1: Have a look at the caresheet section of this site that will give you all the basics you need to know and as for photos there have been many posted here over the years try a search in the General Herps section for BHP's.

| yeh i have been through some of them. but id like to get all the info i want in one thread and see new photos and hear ideas from people who may not have posted before as there are new members with new ideas all the time.
also if we all go through old threads everytime we want to know something like a lot of members have suggested to people asking questions lately, there wouldn't be any new posts for anyone to look at,which in my opinion would make this site quite boring.
but thats just my opinion
regards dave

Here's my Hannibal, bought off Shane Scarff and i'll be getting more off Shane too. Absolutely superb and a fantastic character. Don't be fooled by his open mouth...he likes to play up a bit but he's never bitten.

I believe mine are Northern Territory. I like all the bhp's.... you can never have enough of them. Like i say, i'll be buying more from shaneaussiepythons because Hannibal is just such a classic.

Davy, BHP's are very hardy snakes that are dead easy to keep. While they're babies they can put on a bit of a display and act like a venomous snake, but it's all bluff. If they strike it's usually a head butt with the mouth closed. When they're like this it actually gives me a good laugh, watching them trying to be big and tough . They soon grow out of this and settle down to become very docile and suprisingly friendly.
As for caging, height isn't very important for them, just floor space. Their heating can be just the same as for most other pythons. A lot of keepers go on about how BHP's like the higher basking temps of 32-34'C, but i've found that they do just as well with lower basking temps of 27-28'C. I use a reflector globe for day heating and a ceramic globe for night heating.
Newspaper is preferred as a substrate but BHP's can quickly tear apart sheets of newspaper and even get under sheets of paper and lift them up close to globes. If you decide on cat litter then the cage will need to get cleaned out very often to avoid the cat litter getting dusty. As BHP's are diggers, they will inhale dust particles from cat litter which clogs their nostrils and causes dry sneezing. Also dont use heavy furniture that could colapse on them if they decide to dig the substrate out from under it.
Babies prefer rat pups as food but stubborn feeders usually take chickens as a second choice. Their growth is very rapid and they soon become solid, bulky and heavy. Avoid x-large rats that have high body fat, as this can cause health issues in BHP's. Once feeding, BHP's never look back and have huge appetites!!
Once again...very hardy and dead easy to keep!!!
Here's a male giving his best mate serpenttongue and big squeezy hug!!

He hatched in 2001. He reached that size in 3 years and only gets fed one medium rat every 2-3 weeks. I dont know why he grew so fast because my other BHP's are on the same diet but have grown much slower.
