which snake????

Well im gunna get a snake but which one......

ive never kept a snake before so i'd like something easy to start off with..
was thinking a coastal carpet but i wouldnt have a clue. if someone could point me in the right direction that would be sweeeeeeett also what dimensions would its cage be and what would i need for it eg heating...
also would it be alright to purchase a male and female hatchy from different people (to keep bloodlines mixed)?

also would it be easier if i bought some live mice and chucked them in a tank and let em breed so i could feed the mice live to the snake to give a more natural feeling.

cheers gurds

Hi mate. It's great to hear you want to get a snake. Coodos to you. Do a search using the search function above as I think you will find a million answers to your questions. This question gets asked by nearly everyone who signs up. ;-)

Not having a go, just letting you know there are heaps of answers elsewhere on the site.

loads of info on this, most people suggest the childrens (spotteds, childrens, stimis) because there small and hardy.
you can mix bloodlines but if your buying something like a stimi, i would want to keep the locality pure so it would be easier imo to just buy from the one person.

feeding live is ilegal in some states, and its cruel to the mice, it is also potentialy harmful to the snake (scratchs etc)

im only new to the game aswell, I only keep a stimi and a bhp so cant comment on coastals or anything like that, but both my snakes have been great the bhp is the most active and best to handle by far hes got such a nice nature..
the stimi is a bit narky but is settling down alot

Gurds,

I asked the same question a couple of days ago and the response was great. Most people recommended a spotted or childrens python to start with.

Don't throw in live mice (worms, disease, potential injury to snake and it's illegal) frozens don't appear to expensive.

Do a search for enclosures and some of the setups will blow your mind.

I am still awaiting my licence so I can start.

Cheers

Dutch

thanks for the info guys

well so far my choice is a spotted python because like you said arbok they grow small and they are around same price for hatchies

so what size enclosure would i need for a spotted python? and what equipment would i need eg heating?

all info appreciated

cheers gurds

It's one of those things mate. You really need to do your research via Google, from meeting people in your locale (you'd be surprised just how many people are happy for you to come and see their snakes) and getting out.
I hate to say it, but if you are looking for a quick fix from this post, it wont happen. Go and find out yourself. Seek and ye shall find.

I'm currently awaiting my licence so I can purchase my first snake as well. I've been told to keep the hatchlings in a small tank because they will feel more secure and won't feel they have to protect such a large area. I do have a larger tank set up (see pic) but I will be keeping the snake in a small plastic tank inside this one until he/she's a bit bigger. I'm probably going to get a spotted python and I can't wait to get it.

I have a heat rock in my tank for warmth but I also want to get a small light put in cause it's a bit dark in there.

I'd suggest getting a few books on the subject.

Here's a good website to purchase books on reptiles....

The best thing to do is research research research. Make sure you really want one and understand what it takes to look after one. Just get all your gear first. You want your snake to be as stress free as possible.

ive done some research over the last couple of days on varius snakes and ive gone through some threads on this forum. have printed off some care sheets for the spotted python and i am as keen as anything

so what is the recommended size enclosure for a 2 year old+ spotted python?
if i get a pair of hatchies ill be feeding em on pinkies and keeping in one of those plastic tubs like this one except they are a little bigger.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I thought the whole point of these forums was to share information with other who share your same passion. If all we wanted to do was search the internet we could have just stuck with google. Also I find it a bit frustrating when people answer your posts and don't answer the question that's asked.

would recommend you get the book "keeping & breeding australian pythons" edited by Mike Swan. I am new to this too and i found this to be very helpful. Goes through general stuff and also has a chapter on each species. Good luck.
