There impressive looking snakes, harder to breed than most pythons.
If you do come across anyone in Australia selling them, I would be waiting beside you in the cue!
I reckon they would be harder to obtain in captivity than Rough scaled pythons right now!

There are 2 held on licence in NSW by 1 keeper, and they've been kept by the same person for at least the last 2 years (which realistically is probably since the '97 ballot in NSW). In other states, I'm not sure but I'd assume some are kept.

Like Marc said, they're out there, but fat chance getting any. You might have to have somthing similar to $24K worth of Womas to trade ;-)

the sighting was not verified. This is why it is included in the Australian Species lists even though it is not found on mainland Australia.
A few found there way into collections after being bred at Melbourne Zoo possibly 20 years ago. These two ended up with a very good breeder in SA who intended to breed them. But alas, he received them in very poor health and they both died after a long period of trying to improve their health.
Then there was the 2 that were declared on the NSW amnesty as discussed allready. Really these are exotics smuggled into Australia, but are held as an Aussie snake due to the single sighting all those years ago. |

| I have to totally disagree with that statement Bob. The pair of snakes you refer to were offered for sale to me many years ago. At the time, I was a young and relatively inexperienced keeper with limited finances. As a result, I let a more experienced keeper go halves with me in the pair and they were maintained at his facility. The snakes arrived in good health and they were stunning, large animals. The story of their eventually demise is not something that I'll discuss on a public forum. If I ever had that opportunity again, I would have found a way to afford them and have kept them entirely myself. At the time, they were the last legally held pair in Australia.

I was informed that they arrived with Salmonela, which eventually killed them. As you where involved in their purchase, then you would know the story better then me. |
