would you buy this snake??

Hi guys,

Missed you all in the recent site downtime!!

Just a Q about a snake i'm considering purchasing:

This snake apparently has worms (been fed live rats), and I have had no experience with this in my own snakes, but the guy has bought a snake wormer and is dosing the snake with it. He hasn't taking the snake to a vet but says this wormer will fix it. Would you agree? Would it be safe to still get it ?(quarantined for the mandatory 3 months of course). Are worms a big problem?

Also, it is a 7 foot coastal, and eats 4 rats a week, is this the correct amount it should be eating?

Sorry for my ignorance, just had little experience with adult snakes, and none at all with worms.

Thanks in advance.

If it got worms and needs treatment there's a good chance it would need to be treated for Flagyllates(sp) as well. I wouldn't touch it until you know it's been treated properly.

I'm pretty sure if the rats are kept poorly, they can get the worms & pass it to the snakes. If the rats are kept & maintained well there is apparently no problem with worms etc. - Only what I've heard & been told.

As for the 4 rats a week - it sounds really over the top!

Hmmm....thanks for that Lester. I want to take it , as the guy hates the snake, and says it needs a good home (got no patience with it). So, might negociate a cheaper price and take him to the vet myself. He is still eating very well apparently, and looks very healthy.

LOL, that's what I thought!!

The guy reckons he treats all his rats with Small animal wormer first, and this should get rid of any worms the snake has (?). But 'somehow' this snake still got worms, so now it's on a snake wormer.

THanks for the input guys, it's great.

Apparently it's agro once in feeding box, but okay out of the cage. the guy says he is very scared of it, which is the reason he wants to get rid of it. Beginner herp and a big snake don't mix he says. The size scares him, but apparently it has never bitten.

It is overweight from the looks of it, it's got the 'small head syndrome'.

Just a thought but if you really want it and he really doesn't why not make taking it to the vet of your choice a condition of buying it. Maybe you could convince him that it is also in his best interest as he surely doesn't want a dead snake.

Hi Ricko,

Er, no. Unless there's another pic somewhere of it?

Micheal, yes, thinking of doing that, but he is already very cheap, so I may just take him to the vet here after i buy him. I just want to look after him, i know there's a risk. I just know he's not getting the proper care there, the owner does not like him at all he has told me a few times.

thanks for the suggestions, very appreciated.

hehe Ricko, wouldn't surprise me if it was this snake, this guy is really scared of it.

I love the for sale ads you see sometimes, that have the 'placid' snake, but the owner is wearing those thick rubber gloves

Hey dude,
personally I wouldnt take it. It is not worth the risk to your current collection. You need to be extremely anal for quarantine to work properly IMO. Maybe if the guy takes a fecal to the vet and gets treatment SPECIFIC to the parasites it is carrying.

And 4 rats a week is a bit much lol!!

Thanks Brodie, I am ringing the guy this afternoon, so I'll talk to him about it. The more I hear from you guys, the alarm bells are sounding.

He is jsut convinced that you give a dose of this snake wormer, and things are all okay
