Yawning??

Hi Guys,

This might sound like a stupid question...but do your snakes yawn a lot??

I have a 5month old DP (he is beautiful) and i take him out at night and sometimes he yawns up to 4 times!
At first i thought this was because he was coming up for a shed, but he shed over the weekend and is still yawning more than once a night?

Is this normal? will he yawn less as he gets older?

Please shed some light...

Bec

RE: Yawning??

Snakes will "yawn" after they have eaten to put their jaws back into place. Apart from that I don't see mine "yawn" much at all.

I've seen my female DP yawn a few time...god it's cute. I never knew snakes yawned.

I think that they yawn (and humans too) when they need more oxygen (maybe the air in their enclosures is a bit stangnat) - thats my theory anyway.

I've found mine will do it more commonly when they sense food about. Seems weird, but it's as if they are preparing for the big gulp down It's only very occasionally I have seen them doing it outside of this. Just my own observations

i see mine yawn if i have them out a bit before the sun comes up
maybe they do it because they are getting tired

i know what ya mean the first time mine yawned and i was holding him i was expecting a tag

however my female jungle looks like she is yawining but you have to be carefull with her as i think she is trying to measure up my fingers as she as got me a few times by a yawn then latching on

getting a photo of a snake yawning wasnt as easy as i thought, he yawned 4 times when i had him out over the course of about 3-4 hrs and i only got one photo! and it was blury cause i was in a rush to get it!
ill try again later.

he is only young, could that be a reason? it cant be stagnat air cause he only does it when he is out of his enclosure

Don't feel alarmed by the yawning becsta.
It's a totally natural thing for them to do.
Only be alarmed if you see that the inside of the mouth isn't as nicely pink and clean as it should be.
The yawning itself can't do any harm, infact i love it when they do so , gives me a great opportunity to take a peek at their health ( saves a lot of trouble and stress prying there mouths open to take a checkup look )
