I dont believe this behaviour to actually be yawning, the way we yawn. They're most likely just stretching their jaws.

As craig said they will do it several times after a feed to put their jaws back in place, but i also agree with Moosey, snakes will stretch their jaws when they think they are getting fed. This will be most noticeable if you let them know its feeding time, but dont offer the food right away. Instead keep them in anticipation for 5 minutes and you'll usually get one or two yawns out of them. I'd imagine they're stretching the jaws in preparation for the strike.

i see where you are coming from serpenttongue, and you probably know a lot more than i do, all you say would ring true, but he tends to do it (yawn) more nights than none, he has never ever struck me and as i said it is common for him to yawn 2-4 times a night within 2-3hr of him being out.
he also doesnt tend to yawn before a meal, but i dont usually watch him that closely as im usually preparing his food

i cant explain it?

And that's usually when it's done - when your back is turned. When you have enclosures that face each other you can see the reflection of one snake in the glass of the opposite enclosure, and by looking into the glass while you have your back to the snake and are preparing it's food, you will often catch it yawn(when they think you're not watching. Bless 'em )
