Do you mean on the floor?

    If so, slate!
It's a natural (black) stone and holds heat better.

You can get an off cut (Aprox. 30x15cm) for $3 at the most, at your local tile shop. - you could score it free if you're lucky!

I tried a bathroom/kitchen tile first, but the polish side kept sticking to my snake's belly scales.
But here you can always turn it upside down and have rough side up!

I hope I answer your question?

P.S. unless you're talking about heat source?
Which in that case infrareds bulbs are perhaps the most popular, effective and cheap ($8 for a 75W)

They tend not to last as long (only few months at worst case scenario) but for 8 bucks, who cares? - plus pets shop will replace them for you, once they blow up!

Another controversial heat source are ceramic heat emmiters... I've used them and don't like them.
They get way too hot (specially for warm QLD) and they tend to dry up the air quite a bit more.
Oh and also (unlike IR), ceramic emmiters don't seem to throw heat as far down to the floor of cage, so the roof of enclosure (melamine) started to bow with excessive heat!

    I hope I covered all?

I think he means that we want to make a new basking ledge under her light, what can we make this out of? Maybe if we used slate?
