We have just released a new book that will give you enough info to keep geckos and legless lizards.

i use white sand coz that what he had when i bought him and its about 2-3 cm thick i have my heat mat running all the time but its only a small one
still researching myself, but that book looks interesting

hope this helps i''ve also been told that the thick tails like it cold and only need the heat to help digest their food

dont know anything about the knob tails but would at a guess think they are pretty close to thick tails
i also mist the enclosure envery night with water

im also going to be selling an adult trio of southern spinytail geckos soon if you might be interested in some of them?

much like thicktails, cheap and easy.... however they require a lid as they are arboreal....
