Go out and collect some Gambusia (sure thats what many people here are talking about)
They are nuisance species that populate in just about any & every fresh waterway. A better option than feeding off an accepted tropical aquarium species JMO.

Know any rivers that have them in Sydney? Preferably near the Bankstown area.
Or are they in most rivers?

They are found in just about any still waterways. Creeks, lakes & rivers.
So long as it's not fast flowing you should be able to find some near the bank.
