Mitchell's / Merten's

Thinking about setting up a pit for V. mitchelli or V. mertensi.
I have a few queries for those experienced in the care of these animals.
Are they large enough to be safe from cats and birds once fully grown?
If kept in an open sided pit, how high would you recommend the walls be?
Do they defecate in the water like water dragons?
Cheers.

RE: Mitchell

Mitchell's would make a nice meal for a cat, Merten's should be ok. Yeah they defecate in the water, you'll need good filtration or a pond that is easily drained and cleaned. Can't help you with an exact height of the walls, personally i would have any outdoor pit fully enclosed.

What he said

The pit would only need to be about 130-140cm high.

i have seen some bery big mertens and i reckon prob at least 5ft high min. i think an adult mertens would kill a cat dont know about mitchels. wouldnt put anything small in an open pit though just incase of cats.

You would be better off setting mitchels up inside in a fish tank.
