What does this beardie behaviour mean?

Hey all. Chucked my beardie out in the sun for a bit today and he was sitting there in the direct sun part of the cage with his mouth wide open. He eventually moved into the shade and closed his mouth. I'm assuming he wasnt looking to the heavens hoping for rain so does anyone know why they do it? Dehydrated? Too hot?

Yeah having his mouth open like that is just his way of cooling down. He can't sweat like other animals so just think of it as similar to a dog panting

I'm pretty sure they do it to help regulate theyre temperature so as to bask longer without over heating

As has been said, he's gaping. Means he's near the perfect temp and needs to let out a little heat. Crocodiles do it on river banks all the time instead of moving out of the sun. It's pretty cool to watch.

Yep, exactly. You would, however, think the dopey buggars would just move from out of the heatsource rather than have to gape.

Well i guess its acase of move or dont move, i know which i'd choose . Sounds like a pretty good life to be a beardie or a croc. Hmm getting a little warm, could go for a dip... nah i'll just open my mouth, i like the scenery here.
