If you mentioned to your wildlife authority that this species was originally named as a Northern snapping turtle and was only re-described as a different species only 18 months ago, they should understand.
Previous to this I was selling them in Vic as Northern snapping turtles, because thay is what they were then. If they haven't updated their lists then they are still under Northern snapping turtles. Some wildlife agencies are a lot behind the times.

Usually this situation is handled by keeping them on your books under the old name which in some sense is still valid.
For example most of the carpet species appear on the books under the same species code, the exceptions being Bredli's and Diamonds. I similar situation exists for the Childreni complex of pythons.
I makes sense in way if you consider that people might already be keeping the species in question when it gets reclassified.
That said, crush may be referring to the rule that in Victoria turtles cannot be traded unless they are self sufficient, which has been defined as having a carapace length of greater than 100mm. (This rule may sound wrong but it does stop the illegal pet trade collecting lots of hatching turtles from the wild so it is not all bad.)

They are very similar to most other short-necked turtles. These little guys really love insects, aquatic weed, bloodworms, prawns, worms etc etc,
Very easy to look after.

What minimum pond size would be required to comfortably house a pair of these massive turtles? Do you have any general information available on the species?

About a 4,000-5,000 litre pond would be sufficient for a pair.

Hi Simone,
Yes, they are very hardy and eat almost anything you feed them including aged logs from creeks and rivers. They love all insects, natural diet riparian fruits, Banana, fish, Prawns, aquatic vegetation and the list goes on and on
