The onley bible on pythons was python of the world vol 1 australia and it was printed 94 but is still a great work and getting harder and more costly to get hold of.Another favourite book of mine is "Song of the snake" by Eric Worrell, this is a must read for snakies, and it is hard to come by these days.

* Care of Australian Reptiles in captivity ~ John Weigal (First herp book I ever read, 1988 - 89) Recommend it to every herp especially newbies.
* Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia ~ Steve Wilson and Gerry Swan
* Ecology of Reptiles ~ Harold F Heathwole and Janet Taylor
* Australian Reptile Keeper's Publication Series. Excellent for basic individual species.

Can anyone recommend a total identification, breeding, husbandry book for all or most captive Australian Reptiles. I know this would be an expensive piece of Literature, but I feel it would be worth every cent.

Cheers

Reptilegirl,
When I said you could have it I meant just that. I have many double copies of books so its no drama, just postage I suppose. I shall have a look although I've just moved so it may take a while, shall let you know.
Cheers.

Weigal is better than Cogger on keeping information. Cogger is a great aid in identification.
As said before Cann is the mann for shelled herps.
Ehmann's book from the Encyclopaedia of Aussie Animals- Reptiles is great again for identification and distribution info.

Has anyone mentioned Gow's Complete Guide to Australian Snakes 1989? It has some useful info particularly if you want to punish yourself then read the section on collecting snakes when we are not allowed to...bummer.

The books I consult the most are
Cogger's, Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia(fifth volume is sufficient, the changes in the sixth arent that substantial)
Cann's Australian FreshwaterTurtles(like hen's teeth)
Ehmann's Encyclopedia of Australian Animals/Reptiles(saw it second hand in Andrew Isle's catalogue)
Dave Vella's Wires/Reptile and Amphibian Rescue, Rehabilitation and release manuel
Blue-tongue Skinks-Contributions to Tiliqua and Cyclodomorphus-edited by Robert Hitz, Glenn Shea etc-Mathias Schmidt Publications
(might get it from Mike Swann)

With Wiegals book be careful about the bit on egg incubation it dont say to open and let air in every so often,a guy i know lost four clutchs of eggs following these directions.Eric Worrell was a legend and pioneered work on venom research as well as being the author of the first reptiles of australia book the precurser to coggers . Olive i have a signed in search of the taipan also it is a very interesting read and will be collectable if signed.

RE: 5 top books

Coggers " bible " sold for $295 on ebay last week.
Another great read is "song of the snake" by Eric Worrell. Published in the early fifties, he talks about his expeditions to northern Queensland chasing Taipans for venom, big scrubbies and his trips toChapell Island catching big Tigers. Catching tigers along the Murray river, Crocs in Kakadu etc.
