Hey all,
I have an Ackie arriving in the not too distant future and was looking at making a stack...
I was hoping to use slate tiles or similar with wooden spacers...
I have a few questions;
- 1) what space should each level be apart? I am getting a juvenile but would like to not have to rebuild the stack every few months to widen the gaps...
- 2) Is slate a good idea to use for these stacks? I was planning to use liquid nails or similar to glue the slate to the spacers...this obviously makes cleaning a little more difficult, any other ideas without attaching the stacks to the enclosure?
- 3) How does everyone else make sure their stack is stable in the event of the little beggars digging underneath it etc?
I would also like to see some pics of anyone else's stacks (have done a search and seen a few but many of the older threads have no pictures attached anymore)...
And finally, any other hints/tips for the little guy as he will be my first monitor...
Simon

There is a really good article in Reptile's Australia. The mag has a Sand Fire Ackie on the front and it covers making stack piles aswell.

you want a tight gap, tight enough for them to squeeze into, but not too tight. A 5-8cm gap off the top of my head seems about right.

Put your stack in the cage before the substrate so it has a firm base

the stack is suposted to be tight and have little light and air flow making a dark warm place for them to pick diffrent temps. alot of the stack ive seen on here realy have little use.
no ofence it just sounds like you are being lazy. you want what suits you and not the lizard.
you will have to change the stack as they grow its part of being a keeper ,read the animal and let them tell you what they need so you the keeper can suply it.

I know many people who have used slate in the stacks only to have their lizards crushed. The stuff might look nice, but its too heavy. Instead use plywood. Does the same job and is a lot lighter. As for the gap, its up too you. They will use them wether its tight or loose. Makes no difference.

TRISTIS - I'm not being lazy at all, I am asking these questions in order to provide what the lizard needs...a simple answer stating that they need to be rebuilt to accomodate regularly would have sufficed...
BIGGUY - Yeah, that was my concern with slate - thanks, plywood it is...
MITCH - Yeah, got the issue, has some great husbandry details but not a whole lot on making the stacks...
Now, next question...
How much should Ackies be fed - I have a good idea of what I will be feeding it, but how do I figure out how much it requires?

Aslan I will build you a stack and photo copy the article in Reptile's Australia mag for you to read.
Free of charge and sent it with your enclosure
Over summer you are ment to feed them every day so the one here will go through two to three tubes of crickets, mince, and a pinkie a week

i've made heaps and use them for skinks, geckos and small goannas. I use tiles (30cm ones-get the cheapest floor tiles on special at bunnings). I then cut lengths of tomato stakes or similar about 2-3cms (use different thicknesses for different spacing). Then glue one of these lengths of wood to each corner of the tile. I use tradesmans choice pvc wood glue (exterior). Once dry turn over and place one on top of the other to the desired height. I only use a thin layer of substrate so the weight makes them very stable. Easy to take out and clean or pull apart to get to the inhabitant.

Cheers,
I was thinking of slate or tiles just because they have much better thermal properties than wood...I will probably look at getting tiles when it get full grown but while they need to be resized prolly just stick with ply...
