Ackies!

HUbby has finally got his wish and we are getting a breeding pair of ackies! He's been wanting monitors forever, so here we go!

I know most of the basics, feeding, housing etc. Any advice is welcome though.

I was just wondering, does anyone know the average life span of ackies in captivity?

We are so excited

Thanks freerider and Zoe!

The man that we are buying them from said that they live to around 20-25! Talk about commitment!

Ackies are great, my favourite little monitors. Great handlers.

All I can say menagerie is keep them hot, feed them plenty and make sure they have plenty of places to hide and explore as they are very active.

Make sure you put in your furniture first and then you add your sand or prefered substrate as they love to dig and excavate. They will bury under rocks and can be killed if the rocks or heavy items fall on them.

Thanks hugsta! I'll definitely make sure that there's nothing that they can make fall on themselves... can't believe how much this menagerie is growing. Someone warned me that you can't stop at one reptile!

I've been told that they love chicken, how would they go if I gave them chicken necks - are they able to work around that?

When Hugsta says keep them hot he means HOT!!! I picked up four little Ackies from him recently and he showed me the temp of the basking spot that his Ackies have. He took the temp with a digital laser gun and it was just over 70degC!!!! I currently have my basking spot at just over 60degC.

Good luck with them you'll love them. They have heaps of character and are very active.
