Advice - Oedura Lesueurii gecko

Hi all,

I'm getting a trio and a spare youngster of Oedura Lesueurii (Lesueur’s Velvet Gecko) tomorrow and wondering if I can use sugar cane mulch on the bottom, on top of sand. Otherwise I'll use playground sand and peat. I've never heard it mentioned, but it seems like a good substrate to use.

Thanks

Falconboy,
I dont keep O.lesueurii but do keep a few of the larger Velvets. I keep mine on Playpit sand mixed with Crumbled Coir Peat and this works fine.

Otherwise, (from what another keeper uses) Coir on its own is fine, as would be sand.

Good Luck! You must show pics when you can!

Thanks Rocket. Was wondering if I'd get a reply.

I just decided to go for Botany Bay sand and peat, few paper towel roll hides and callistemon sticks, in a 20L.

My camera is rubbish, plan on getting pics when I stop being too cheap to buy another camera (rather buy a pair of geckos with the money!).

So you got them....... If you dont mind me asking, what did they set you back? I wouldnt imagine them to be a very expensive species.............

I recommed you have sand on the bottom, a large, but thin, rock sitting on top of the sand covering almost the entire cage (with supports underneath so it can't crush any gecko that gets underneath, then stack a few more smaller thin rocks on top of the main rock. The geckos will spend their days between the rocks, and will forage on top of them during the night. I can't stress to you enough how 'rock-specific' this species is. If you don't have any thin rocks at hand, perhaps stack a few bricks up. They'll love you for it.

Ending up getting 4, an adult trio and a spare young from last year for $300, which I guess is OK.

Thanks Mr bredli. I had intended on doing that when I source some nice flat rocks and glueing some supports. Some thin slate pieces would be nice. Wonder if Slateman can help......

I think $300 is a fair price.

PS, you need to update your signature now! LOL
