G'day guys,
I'm getting ready to buy my first snake and I was just wondering what snake would be the best for beginners to handle and maintain?? I've got a feeling the children's python would be the way to go but I wouldn't mind hearing a few opinions from people who've been there and done it!! Also need to keep in mind the 'missus' factor, the poor girl is even scared of ants, so I need a snake that's calm enough for her to know it doesn't want to strangle her!
any advice would be much appreciated!!
cheers folks - Mike

bredlis are supposed to be great, but murray darlings are supposed to have as good a personality, and are 1/2 the price. My MD is the best snake I've had in 31 years of snake-keeping.

sorry to be a hassle but how much does it cost to get started? Don't wanna raise the young fella as an upper-class snob, but I do want him to live a bit of luxury. Just trying to figure out what im up for here.

Hey, I'm also new - but have just bought a beautiful spotted python. I guess related to children's in some manner... Anyhow... My GF is also petrified of snakes.. in fact Peyote (the spotted python) was the first snake she ever touched. And now... Low and behold she even calls Peyote, and I quote "Cute, almost adorable".
There's pictures of Peyote scattered throughout this site (I am a proud father).
Set up... Well, I'm not at liberty to really say how much I bought Peyote for - but lets say expect over $100 and under $300.
Cost to keep her.... Well, her tank (too big for her at the moment) is a 4 footer costing $120. I got a heat mat and a thermostat... close to $160, I built the lid $45, I had a 4 foot light holder.... A min/max thermometer $30... ummmm... Bricks and rocks assorted from the local river and $5 worth of bricks from the landscaper place.... Oh... the plastic container she's in (30 or 50L I can't recall) $7.99 from Crazy Clarks - make sure it seals well or they have a mirculous way of getting out....
I drilled plenty of holes in the roof of the plastic container and also several vents around the outside. She's happy in it, very friendly and responsive, eats well... in fact.. my GF only dislikes the frozen mice... but loves the snake... funny aye???
Good luck... Hope you find what you're looking for!

do you have an enclosure?
A lot of people start their snakes in plastic crates- they do nothing for me, but a extremely common, cheap, and easy to heat.
I keep mine in aquariums- no the most practicle, but what I have on hand.
My juvie MD is in a 36x18x18, which is a lot bigger than a lot of people advise, but works for him.
my costs so far:
tank- I already had it.
heat cable $35.00
two cheap thermometers $12.00
cheap probe thermostat $75.00
water bowl $17.00 (I went way overkill, $4.00 would do the job)
redgum chips for substrate $7.00
if you have a wood enclosure you can use an IMIT thermostat, $30.00, instead of the probe.
OH- and Soumak the murray darling python, $180.00

Well my first was a childrens python & he is a complete psycho, iv'e since got 3 coastals, 1 maccie & a hybrid diamond x bredli & of those other 5 snakes 3 are placid & handleable & 2 are also crazy physcho's so I think it really depends on the snake, sorry i'm not much help but the best advice I could offer is to buy them as hatchies & than you stand a better chance of getting them used to being handled etc

I agree with Kyro- I have a Darwin, and they are supposed to be snappy, but he is a total puppy dog.

Yea, i think if u get them as hatchies and just handle them relatively regularly (not so much as to annoy them) they will calm right down as they get older.

knackers- the net is the best source of info for common pets like pythons, but a lot of the advice you'll get is opinion, so make sure you ask multiple people, on different boards.
I handle my snakes about every other day, but not for 2-3 days after feeding.
