Another question about a Snakes vision

Howdy peoples,

Reading the other snakes vision question got me thinking about something. Do Snakes see in color? From what I could find it depends what type of Snake ... what about Pythons?

I have noticed with my girl that she seems to be more reactive towards the color Red. If I go near the enclosure in a red shirt she will come like straight to it, but she doesnt seem to respond or notice any other color like red.

I have found that my snake prefers white mice over brown. I have no idea as the reasoning to this, but she will leave brown ones right alone, and will almost take my arm off at the elbow for a while one hehe

I have a mouse book that refers to "white" and "coloured" mice so maybe they are different in someway other then just colour

Short answer is yes.

Reptile's have both rods and cones. The rods pick up low level light while the cones are responsible for the opposite. Different cones are receptive to different wavelengths. Reptiles are thought to have a reduced visual spectrum than humans. Humans can pick up anything between 400 and 700 nanometres. The colour red is close to the 650 nanometre mark. The particular cones responsible for vision within this range are known as red cones. I would imagine that snakies might lack red cones, thus the reason red lights are used at night so as not to disturb nocturnal herps.
