Hello ......I have had a very sick Shingle back with due to the excessive humidity we have had this year and had vet treatment with Baytril which has done wonders. As a matter of interest, the vet told me to crush 1/4 of a (humans) multivitamin tablet high in vitamin A on her food. Now she is keen to get around and looking for things to eat and yet hesitates to eat what is offered such as boiled egg, jellymeat, banana, mango, peaches......I am running out of ideas. Do they like roast chicken? Is there anything they cannot resist ( I do not have snails here)....I would be thankful with any information.
Thanks Jen

| bugga!
Jen, I'd try live foods (mealworms, woodies, crickets) and if it doesn't eat them get some pinkies or fuzzys (baby mice) and if it doesn't eat them then your in trouble
Good Luck

Hi Jen,
Snails are the Shingle's favourite food! There is a lady that sends organic snails and she has very good quality stock, that is what I fed my Shingle.
Her details are: Susann Sweetman, Ryga Snails, PO Box 2248, Gosford, NSW, 2250 OR 02 43741323 OR rygastud@bigpond.net
She has all sizes, and very well priced. Yes, I buy snails thru the post (don't tell my Dad I don't know how I would live it down)

Thanks Jordo & Anne......Yes, bugga alright, in more ways than one!!!! although I am so happy she has come this far, as she was so very sick very sluggish and eyes closed...... My shingle back hutch has freerange crickets and woodies for the odd treat, I haven't any pinkies( and not sure if I can get them in this neck of the woods)..... Anne, those snails in the post sound a good idea, might look into that. I have talked to a vet a tick or two ago and he told me to raise the temp in the hutch a little to stir up the appetite.....so I am in the process......I have a refridge airconditioner going to lower the humidity and have an extra light in the hutch to create more heat.....a little chaotic here.
Cheers Jen

Your nearest pet shop should sell pinkies or else you can probably order them from herptrader or somewhere else. But if you can get snails your all set!

Susann Express Posts the little snails in a Takeaway container with nice fresh lettuce too, so depending on where you are (where are you anyway) you could get them next day. |

You might also want to try baby spinich and cherry tomato's, they seem to love them.
Good luck.

What a lovely helpful clutch of people in this site.......Thankyou all so much for you helpful hints. I am going to get in touch with Susann about her snails, yet express post takes ages to get here...Mt Isa..Qld... so whether they can take the long trip.
As I have sat here and kept an eye on the temp an humidity, I have noticed with a good balance of 35.5deg heat and 60% humidity the sick Shingle back has taken to the boiled egg and eaten quite a bit........so we may have hit the jackpot after these last 2 weeks of eating nothing.
Jordo, we only have one pet shop and I do not think they have mice, yet I know there are a lot of people in town with snakes so maybe able to pick up privately.
Neil, I will try your spinach and tomatoes....seems like they go for anything, eh!
Thanks Simone for your email and great help.
Better get back to work before I get the sack
Thanks and hugs to everyone

just4fun, good to hear its got its appetite back, and I'm sure if you have snake keepers in the area they wouldn't mind giving or selling you a few mice if you need them.
jordo, I don't think herptrader sell mice (I could be wrong, it happens quite often) and I also don't think pinkies or fuzzies would survive the trip, either fresh or frozen.

I found that a couple of their favorites are Strawberry's, can't resist them, and chicken mince with a raw egg mixed in. That will get it going.
