I got some new blueys the other day, about a month old ( New Baby Blue Tongue Pics), and temporarily they are just in a large tub with a clamp lamp for heat (and one for UV). Because they are tubby little buggers, they are slipping on the plastic floor so I put in some aspen bedding I have. It looks great and they can now grip, but since I put it in they are all looking like they are trying to get out.
Is this likely only because of their 'different' enclosure or is there a chance the aspen bedding is annoying/irritating them somehow?
I'm not a big fan of sand, newspaper or breeders choice.
Thanks.

Sometimes they even sleep against the wall as if they are standing up lol.
I have a few youngins in a tub atm that are doing the same thing. I have even read that they can get sunken in backs due to them leaning against the walls.
Pile the bedding up so they can bury themselves in it, that should give them more security and help them settle down a bit. |

Yes, the odd one has done it occasionally as I expected, but since I have put it in they are all doing it, and much more intensely.

Like amazonian said about the sunken backs, I have personally had that happen to very young juveniles who constantly stood up in the corners. Only thing I can suggest to help prevent that is to try and build up the corners so they cant sit at right-angles. I used to make little climbing gyms (like at mcdonalds!) out of toilet rolls and shoeboxes and stuff to keep them occupied as much as possible. Lots of shredded newspaper helps too. |

I did a behind the scenes tour at Featherdale, they had some blueys that had spinal issues. They were kept in tubs with UV etc but it had something to do with the size of the tub. They would sleep everynight arched up in the corner of the tub and in the end, got bent spines. They said baby blueys have fragile bones and this was brought on due to the size of the tub they were kept in............I have never experienced this problem but it might be worthwhile to give them a yell.

One of these guys does have a bit of a indent in his back already (when I got him) but I am keeping an eye on it. None of them seem to sleep in the corners, so I don't think that will be a problem.
It seems it might have just been the change that got to them as they seem to have settled and are already burying in it, so they don't seem to dislike it too much.

| | | | i think i read on the bluetongueskinks.com caresheet that they dont recomend aspen for young blueys due to the splinters it may have. any one have any experience with this? I was gonna get some aspen till i read that bit.
anyone know why they'd like to lean/sleep on corners? | | |
