AUCTION, do we need one?????

A friend of mine has been talking about the pros and cons of setting up a reptile auction site.
He approached the owner of a bird auction site and that person is willing to add a reptile page to his site, site commission for selling is 2.85%
This bird auction site gets something like 1.2 million hit a month!!!!!!wow!!!!!

I told my mate that I would start a thread on this site and pose the question,

What do people think?????

Could there be a need for an auction site????

Do you think it would get much use???????

Any feed back would be appreciated.

how can you have a limited auction time on something such as a reptile when people would be bidding on something they may have not seen
also noone would want to auction their reptiles off as all reptiles have a pretty standard price wherever you go
sorry, just dont think it would work and i think if it did, the people using it would have to be complete @holes

I think it would be good, however you shouldn't be able to bid without a valid reptile licence number....

Not sure how you would get that to work??

Excellent idea ... ONLY if the potential bidders are screened and registered before being allowed to bid
mmm ... something like an old fashioned gentlemans club or the thoroughbred sales

(my thoughts only)

I have a funny feeling the 1.2 million hit a month web site might be US based, which doesn't really mean much when it comes to us here in Oz.

i am not interested in selling my snakes at auction. i sell babies at a fixed price and that's it. imagine putting a diamond hatchy on for no reserve and it sells for $50

jungle.....

This could also be a easy way for young new herpers to get into the hobby....

If it sells for $50, thats cool....

Who sets the prices on live animals anyway - the seller

Seriously.... $350 - $400 for a snake which has fed once or twice and has shed??

How much work does the seller have to put in, not much.....

He does not do the mating, the snakes do, the seller may incubate the eggs, but for the size of the clutch of a diamond, if you sold them for $50 each you would still be in front (feeding, electricity for incubation)....

I thought Herp keeping was a hobby, not to see who can make the most money??

Matt

Matt I can only guess that you have never grown a pair from hatchies and fed them and cooled them and incubated their eggs and got them feeding.
There are plenty of young people in the hobby already without me becoming a charity
I don't think you know what you're talking about
