Yesterday I made an enquiry re a snake for sale on the Herp Trader. My details were forwarded onto the seller who contacted me last night be email which went something like this Bob
Thanks for the enquiry.
My Python is still available, but there are a few people interested in it. They are looking at paying the asking price, so unless you wanted to pay more, I'd probably have to sell it to them as they contacted me first. It's a good snake- very well handled, but a bit small side as it had trouble eating in the first year or so.
Let me know what you think.
Kind Regards
You have to wonder how common this practice actually occurs. There has been many a time when I believed I was buying a snake only to have the seller suddenly sell to someone else.

I like the good old, first in first served
I hate it when sellers say "well you could have it if you want to pay more"

there are also plenty of people who ask "if I offer you more will you take it?"
I get that all the time when people ring asking me to play at their wedding and the date is already taken. It's better to stay loyal I reckon...

I suppose that is the problem with a decentralised free market trade. All sellers are a law unto themselves and most are too small to develop a bad rep with most people

That exact thing happen to me about 2 or 3 weeks ago there was a Olive Python pair and Enclosure for sale and i have been looking for somehting to come up longer then i can remember and convince my parents for a loan of the money, but the day before we were to pick them up i got a message on my mobile say sorry but they have been sold i mean the day before, its ridiculous i had finally convinced my parents for a loan, and the day before he sends me a message!
I know how you feel Bob.

That's so wrong imo. I once "bought" a snake (they told us it was ours) only to be told later that they stuffed up and their other half had actually sold the snake earlier to someone else. I later found out that they had a call from a high profile herper AFTER they "sold" it to us and decided to sell to them instead for the same price. I was so incredibly peeved as I REALLY wanted that snake and we were definately in first. I will never EVER even enquire about an animal from that person again even though they're quite big breeders because I think what they did was extremely low. Maybe I should get over it but I don't want to |

I think it would be hard though for a beginer in the herp trade who hasnt kept much and never sold anything before. Its hard to know what some things r worth and the only way you can really tell is by seeing what the responce to a price is. Especially when u ask in these forums and you get responces like, what ever you r willing to pay. That being said though it would be very dissapointing to thought u have bought somthing and have the seller pull out on you.

It is wrong, we were buying some snakes just Saturday form an APS memeber, after telling the person we will take them, he then told us that they were ours. The only way he wouldn't sell them to us was if someone else offered him more money, that he would take it but would let us know so we had a chance to better it. How generous.
I think it is very common Bob.
