Beardie temps

Hi all, i have finished my enclosure, im testing out the temps before i put anything in there.

Im using a 100W Phillips Spot One Globe, and a NECT10 Blacklight 40W.

Im using a dual probe thermometer to test temps.

The temps in my enclosure are as follows -

Hot end, the probe is dangling about 8cm under the globe, and in cool end its nearly on the grass about 1cm in the air.

The hot end is 41.6deg, and cool end is 27.8deg, beardie hatchies are going to be going in there so im just making sure what temps will be fine.

If needed i can go and get a 60W Phillips SpotOne globe, to keep temps down?

Also, my enclosures a bit bigger than 5 x 2 x 2 and has two vents in there, one low in cool end and one high in hot end, theyre 35cm long each.

Thanks.

I'd recommend using a thermostat to control the temperatures of your enclosure.

Also, when measuring the temperature of the basking spot, the probe should be on the actual surface of the basking area (eg basking rock if that's what you use) and not dangling in the air.

What is your habitat made of ...glass or wood/MDF...Why are you using 2 globes for heat??????.& a UV ? . Wouldnt use more than 75w basking light in your dimension tank......thermostat is up too you....i dont use them...some do ,some dont....if you get the watts right there is no need (my opinion only...no offence to thermo uses!)
Under basking area i use for hatchies 36-38*.......cool end should be no more than 23 for that size habitat
with this you should have a 10* drop in temp at night(at your basking end) ....all lights off at night.

I dont use globes for heat, i said i can get a 60W globe incase the 100W is too hot.

I got told that my enclosure size is big enough to have a good gradient, therefore i didnt need a thermostat.

dragonlady: my enclosures made of wood/mdf, and theres glass sliding doors at the front.

Is 27-28 ok for hatchies in cool end? And i suppose 42deg is a bit too hot? Although i havent tried it on an actual basking surface, like what MissB said.

I was just testing the temps and getting a rough idea of what it would reach.

Im thinking that the 100W is too powerful? and maybe a 60W is better ?

Thanks.

Ide go for 60/75w....get temp at the height of your hatchies head approx under basking spot, then adjust accordingly...as stated i use 36-38* & 23* at cool end....yes 42* too hot & 27* to hot.
What are you using for substrate....sand works well to keep cool end temp down & you dont have to worry when spraying them with water.

yeh 100w does seem a bit hot, mayb even a 75watt one would be better coz that mite keep the basking spot hot still

dragonlady : i use fake grass for mine, i thought it was a bit easier in the long run, since i didnt want sand to get the tracks of the sliding doors lol

The only way id get the temps down is to get a lower wattage globe? Id say 60W..I might get a 75W spare, incase i want to change over.

Thanks for the info people, as i said i just want to get everything as perfect as possible.

Nicely said blakeblake...............& 27-28 in the cool end too hot!...if temp on the outside of your habitat rises so it will on the inside.
And turf aint easy always...as soon as it gets dooed on ..you need to change it..thus needing upt-teen changing pieces ...also taking everything out...water,veg dish, caves, climbing branches, basking stump etc... each time.Unless you have it in sections which they can dig under & probably suffocate. Then there is the expence of replacing it.........& now you think i dont like turf!.....you are right.
As natural as possible as you can leads to healthy reptiles.....but each to their own & i wont condemb anyone who does use it....in the long run i dont have time for it...& sand is easy ..it clumps together & allows easy cleaning & good temp in habitat.

id use sand although it gets stuck in the tracks with sliding doors, my next enclosure will have sand, dont know what ill be putting in there though lol.

Im off today to get a 60W globe and check what temp it gives off, ill post results asap.

Im not putting anything in there for a couple of days since the enclosure has just been built and the liquid nail smell is still there! wish it was odourless lol.

Thanks.

Hi all, just fitted a 60W Globe and let it run, the temps im getting now are -

Hot end = 32.3deg, the probes touching the branch.
Cool end = 26deg, probes in one of the caves.

Is this alot better than the previous temps i posted? And am i supposed to have the probes on the branch? Its virtually the closest part to the light.

Thanks.
