| | | Beardy hibernation? Hey,
I have a pair of central beardes and was wondering how to cool them off to get them to breed. They have a uv tube a spot light and a heat rock in their tank.Im afraid if i turn them all off the tank will get way too cold at night. What should i do? |

At the moment it should be about 12 on, 12 of, gradually drop it, say 10 on, 14 off for a few weeks, then 8 on 16 off. When the weather warms up, gradually increase again.
Unless your night time temps get under 10-15, I wouldn't worry about them being too cold - thats what brumation is all about, they go into a period of not using energy and their organs slow down (so to speak).

Gender: | | | | In fact, it freezes, but beardies will bury themselves in the best possible places (that your enclosure won't provide). I never worry much about forcing burmation, as falcon said they usually will just do it themselves without touching the temps. Night temp changes are enough to let them know and often beardies may come out mid winter for a weeks basking, a few bugs, and go back into burmation ( but thats the difference between burmation and hibernation) Reptiles in the wild still come out to bask on warmer winter days.

Hope this is ok as its about brumation! | Not sure about that. Mine went into brumation naturally at 6mths or so old, and at 12mths are the same size as known 2 year olds, so it mustn't stunt them much! I will say I do have one half the size of its siblings, but thats been that way every since they were born, so its not from premature brumation.

if you dont have enough weight on them it is risky to their health... my preference is brumation when fully grown
i wont be everybodies... i do mum them a bit... hey they are my other kids!
PS... i wouldnt have taken it critically!... opinions are that what they are |

I pretty much kept daylight and heat the same through winter so other than bumping the reverse cycle aircon heat up full bore overnight to keep ambient temps up I guess I really didn't have a choice. I think 12mths would be ok, don't know if I'd wait for 2 years though.
