I have notived that my beardy isnt eating much if any of his greens. Hes about 6 months old and all he seems to eat is his crix. Should i be worried or are there any ideas out there that i might be able to try as to getting him to eat greens?
Is it ok to give them meal worms at this young age? I heard that they can cause problems when given to young beardies?
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

I've never given mealworms to any of my beardies at any stage- i have heard that its wise not to offer them to them until they are close to full grown.
As for the greens, what types were you offering?

mealworms arent recommended fro 2 reasons, theyre high in fat, and the chitin shell causes impactions.
you can try putting a few freshly shed mealworms in his salad to get his attention, but make sure theyre freshly shed (white) and not too many. hes still growing so they shouldnt cause weight probs @ his age.
try the asian salad greens from coles, my girls love it.

DO NOT GIVE LETTUCE!!! .... to draw attention you can use a laser pointer also some beardies would rather see a whole bok choy leaf than a cut up mulch .... I would only use mealies as a last absolute resort and as chris said only ever white freshies !

I don't recommend mealworms either.Whole bok choy leaves are good as they rip it apart,Lately my guys aren't as interested in cut up bok choy unless as a leaf, but they have suddenly got right into fruits which they would always ignore, mine are the same age as yours so try a variety of offerings, endive, and lots of others,Good luck.

I would highly recommend the asian salad mix from Coles too.
Mine are much younger - only nine weeks and neither of them went anywhere near the veges I offered except to walk all over them and I tried all different kinds. However, the first day I put the asian salad mix in there, they both ate some.

Has taken a couple of days of trying, but I just tried it again, and my Beardie went for it!!! He followed the laser from the back of his enclosure to the side where I had some vegies, and he went for them!!!! First time I have actually seen him eat the vegies (have guessed that he has been eating them due to the vegie pile getting smaller).
Thanks bunnykin for the tip - anyone else wanting a sure-fired way of getting your Beardie to eat vegies, give this a go!!!! It's also just fun watching your Beardie go after something that is "live" and doesn't result in messiness!!! |
