Some of the substrates include
* Newspaper
* Sand
* Gravel
* Outdoor Carpet and Synthetic grass
* Egg cartons
* Wood shavings, Mulch Corn Cob Litter, Coconut Fibre etc.
The best substrates will vary between animal.

ok, i guess it depends on how much time you have to clean it out. my carpet has astro turf and my water and childreni hav newspaper, most of my lizards hav astro turf but all the new ones hav newspaper. i would use astro turf or marine carpet, you can get it from bunnings.

I use paper towel for my little ones and newspaper for my bigger ones. All subtrates have their pros and cons. I like newspaper because it is cheap, readily available and makes cleaning enclosures easy.

I used to used the recycled newspaper pellets ie cat litter but found it a bit of a pain when I fed my snake trying to make sure he didnt swallow any pellets along with his dinner
Now I have switched to astro turf or Sundeck as bunnings call it and I have two pieces so I can clean one and use the other
Its a little expensive to start 1 meter is about 30 dollars but you only need to buy it once and not each time you clean out the viv

newspaper or butchers paper is the best by far imo, you just cant beat it and the snakes love it as a hide. At least 10- 20 layers is the go and up it to 30-50 when gravid.
They absolutley love it.
