The NECT10 is a household fluro that gives off UVB in greater quantities than the commercial ones,
A Blacklight gives off more uvs then a reptile brand one
Some great people and freinds told me this the only reason im questioning this is
1/ im new to reptiles
2/ i have never heard of this before
3/if this is true im getting ripped when i goto the pet shops and paying40-50 a uv globe

| | | | There is a UK website called UV Guide or something similar. Do a Google search and you should find it. They have tested a huge range of reptile lighting products and posted the results. I got an email forwarded to me from them regarding blacklights. They got hold of one (not sure if it was the NEC T10) and tested it. It was putting out reasonable UV-B, but the peak output was outside the range of what is useful to reptiles. I still have the graphs etc. from the tests they did.
Not sure if they have posted this test on their website, but it was a while ago so I expect they would have. I still use the blacklight and have no complaints with it. |

The colour temperature is more of an issue for when trying to match lighting to 'daylight' to get correct colour balance, mainly in the photographic field. If you want more 'normal' light as well, use a twin battern and add a 'daylight' tube of around 5500K. NEC don't claim it gives off a good colour, just UV.

It is not only how much UV the lamp produces that you have to look at when selecting a globe but also the decay rate (how quickly it stops producing UV).
There are many UV products now available and they may seem comparitivly cheaper when you first purchase them, but we have found that most of these lamps have the quickest decay rate needing more constant replacement.
Bottom line is if you pay for quality you will get quality, check our www.uvguide.co.uk for ome pretty good information on available UV sources
Hope this makes sense
Take care
