Can someone tell me is there any books published primarily on breeding and husbanry that goes in depth with each species of Australian Reptile.
By in depth i mean several pages per species.
I have some good books, but most give scales counts and locations colourings etc which is great for identifications etc.
Some other books are species specific and others offer miles of useless info.
There is always lots of questions and comments on so many different forums about breeding and husbadry issues with lots of different opinions and experiences.
If there isnt a book as yet i can see a need for a set of books that detail such topics as husbandry, annual temperatures and timing of temperatures, feeding, health issues, breeding tips and information and experiences from renound breeders and keepers.
Maybe we could put together a team of people to publish a set of books that cover every species of Australian Reptile.
There seems to be a fantastic group of people here with untold amounts of untapped knowledge and experience that could be put to use to help new comers and even experienced keepers to improve there breeding and husbandry techniques and in the long run help to create awareness and increase numbers of Australian Reptiles.
The set of books could break down int titles such as Venomous Snakes , Non Venomous Snakes , Lizards, Turtles, Frogs etc
I would be glad to be involved with whatever i can do to help.
We could publish the works and the profits could be used for reptile awarenss groups, charitys, this website and even funding the future editions and expeditions.
Maybe im way off course on a pipe dream too, who knows.
Please tell me if somethinf this comprehensive already exists.
I realise it would be a huge task to compile, who wants to help ?

There are a few good books around on breeding oz pythons most seem to come from usa or uk. The only trouble is that each one will contradict the other in one way or the other. Your on to a good train of thought there thou.

I would be more than happy to be a ghost writer/ editor of a Herp related text book. I have always wanted to write a novel or something similar.
There is a lot of experience on here that would make a great read.

Sounds good jungle, Jason, i think your right, not everyone would give up the good stuff, but even if half of them give us half their info, its a lot more info than most of us could ever find out at the moment.

Switch,
It's already been done.
Go to www.reptilepublications.com.au They're some reptile breeders in Victoria and they have published several titles (catalog of the Keeper series at http://www.reptilepublications.com.a...?catalog.htm&1) and have many more on the drawing board. I've got a few of these and they are very good. They're also relatively cheap - they sell them on-line for $12.95 but you can buy them at many reptile shops for $15 - $20.

No worries Switch!
When i was growing up all the animal books I got (whether they be reptile, mammal, bird or whatever) were published overseas and concentrated on what was available in their part of the world, and how you had to look after them during the bitterly cold months of December, January and February. And other crap. Suppliers and dealers were always overseas as well.
So whenever I find a locally published book that has good solid information (especially if it is affordable) - like this series - I like to promote it when I can.

A very good one if you can get your hands on it is Barker & Barkers Pythons of the World, Volume 1 Australia. A truly excellent read | | | |
