Burning incense in a house with snakes...

Can someone please help me out and settle an argument? My girlfriend wants to see it in writing.
Is it ok to burn incense in the same room as snakes? Even if it is a well ventilated room and only "occasionally".

I can't say if its OK or not but when I lived in Malaysia we used to take visitors to the snake temple. They had very venemous snakes laying around all doped up. They said the incense made them calm. Don't know what it done to the snakes in the long run.

Hehe, forum posts count as 'in writing' now

It's probably not going to cause much harm but I definately wouldn't do it. Some people do, some people smoke in their herp rooms (including some 'top' breeders). It's a little bit like a person smoking. It's not going to immediately cause you to get sick, but it's doing damage.

I look at my herps as I do any other animal or even babies. Dogs and cats hate the smell of things like inscence and smoke and the like and you wouldn't do it around a baby so why do it around snakes? Personally I am particular about the deodorisers I use around my aniamls and I wouldn't burn inscence around them.... But hey thats just me I guess

I'm not sure about incense, but the constant use of deodorants or perfumes in a room can make animals very sick. They lose coordination and they stop eating. I've never heard of one dying from that but it's pretty safe to assume that if you leave a snake in a room like that and they refuse to eat, they'll eventually die. We've seen the effects of it before in a friends snake, after a couple of weeks in a different room (one where there were no teenage females  ) the snake returned to normal behaviour.

The thing is Star11 the ultimately they are your animals and you do what you like but i think you would be hard pressed to find anyone that would do it with theirs. Tell your girlfriend if she wants to burn them then go outside and burn them.... There haven't been any test to say not to do it but you decide. Like we have said we wouldn't because there is more of a chance it will make them sick then not.

What IS the best thing to put in a room with snakes and lizards then to freshen up the place?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I'd never burn incense in my house.
