Can Gippsland Water Dragons Dig/ Tunnel

Hi all, weve decided to build our Gippsland Water Dragans a outside enclosure so that they have plenty of room. What I want to know is are they good diggers as I want to put a conreate 200mm wide concrete strip around the perimeter around the outside of the cage, and leave the floor as sand/dirt so that I can grow real plants and grass etc. Will they be able to dig there way out by digging a tunnel under the conrete or not. Thanks

yes they could dig under it, if i were you i would make the concrete beam 200-300mm under the ground level.

Will cost you more in concrete but better safe than sorry.

I have kept EWD's in very large pits with lots of ponds etc and still observed them digging at the edges.

Very good diggers however they usually only dig to lay eggs, its best to extend the walls of the enlosure down below ground level at least 30cm imo.

they will dig, but not that much... i think you will be safe!

i'll show you a picture of my outside eastern water dragon enclosure.... i have put big rocks all the way around the edge to keep it natural looking and to stop them digging under the aviary sides....

just an idea you might like to consider..... just as effective, cheaper and better looking than concrete!

Matt

Not the best pic, but you can sort of see what im talking about

Thanks Matt, that looks great. I don't know were I would be able to get some large rocks from as the only place here wants a fortune for them. Might have to go bush walking lol. For now I might have to stick to the concrete but I love the rock idea, as they need to get out there desperateley. I have them currently in a 6ft indoor enclosure and I'm nearly having to clean it everday because it just smells so bad and the odor is going right through my house . I think they will be a lot more happier in the outside one as it's huge around 9ft long and 6ft high x 5ft wide. It's build from solid wood with mesh all around. I'm a little worried that they might rub there noses but hopefully they won't with all the room. If they do I might have to put some tin around the sides or something like that to stop them.

Not sure where you live, but if there are foxes around make sure they can't dig in as well.

i know what u mean! i had my 2 in an inside 5ft enclosure and it STANK! took too much maintenance to keep it clean and smelling good.... plus outside they have so much more room! the aviary i have my 2 in is 10ft x 5ft x 6,8" high there is so much more room and they seem heaps happier! especially with the massive pond they have to swim in!
