Canker / Mouth rot

Here is a pic of mouth rot / canker in a carpet python. Thought I would post this pic for some of the new people to the hobby so they can see what it is.

Was my python. Sadly she passed away from it. She went to bite me one day and hit the glass doors on the enclosure. That pic was taken about 2 months after I first noticed a little bit of swelling in the lower jaw.

Was very tough to see her go. Even with treatment, (injections for antibiotics, surgery to remove dead tissue) she just did not make it.

For the newbies, the first signs of Canker is swelling of the gums so that the lips dont close or line up properly. You will also see tiny spots of blood on the gums and further within the mouth. Open sores start to develop and from within those sores comes the cheesy crap that's associated with Canker. The cheesy crap usually looks just like cheese spread but can also look like scrambled eggs and it clings to the gums.

I've seen severe cases where the gums are completely replaced by this cheese and it has spread down into the throat. I've seen jaws break and crumble when touched with a swab and the palatine teeth fall out.

It's definately a serious problem that must be dealt with as soon as it's discovered. If ignored, it will lead to the animals death.

I actually fear mouth rot more than a mite infestation.

yes it is sad to lose a snake, i lost my file snake on saturday, it was from unknown causes, it was perfectly healthy and had all the right conditions to live in, it had spasms and really un-co swimming it was like swimming straight into the ground and in cirlcle etc this was on saturday morining, the only thing that i could think of is a brain tumor or something the alike, the only phsical sign it had was a slight inflamation behind the head and it was also slightly sowlen (how the hell you spell that lol?), i rang the breeder when i noticed what it was doing and she said bring it out staright away but around 10min after i rang her it died but we took it down to her so she could still look at it, she said that it was abnormally thick and large (not long) for its age and compered to its birth mates but other than that she didnt find anything....one really good thing that happened that day is she gave me another one free of charge! and i bought this snake ages ago from her! so anyone in darwin i reconmend her!!! (i would of reconmended her before this to) she owns Top End Reptiles it in humpty doo, i would sugest to go down and have a look.

sorry for blabering in you post craig.a.c

Thanks for puting that info up Serpenttongue.

I wasn't sure what to write about it. As people can see from my pic it is a bad thing for any snake to develop.

Would a snake stop eating with this and how soon would it happen? Also what are the primary causes of this?

It's an old house/castle on a hill.

Mine did not eat since its jaw began to swell. As for the other causes, I'm not sure. Maybe other members (Serpenttongue) could fill us in.

Yes canker is enough to stop a snake feeding. I'd imagine there's pain to all the swelling and the fact that a snake has canker will lead to stress, which in turn leads to food refusal.

Canker is mainly caused by an infection in the mouth. This can be caused by a broken tooth from striking at the glass or striking tweezers/tongs/forceps during feeding, gum abrasions or rodent bites around the snout, lips and gums etc(another good reason not to feed live!!!).

If caught and treated very early the infection can heal quickly and i have found that diluted listerine really packs a punch.

Hey ST, how would you treat them with the listerine?
