Cannibal Feeders

Well I started to breed my own feeder rats a few months ago with a single pair. The female has had 2 litters. The first have already been used and the second litter were hoppers. I was going to freeze them today when I got up to find them eating the mother!
Has anyone else had this happen? Could they have killed her and eaten her or is it more likely she died and they started eating her. They were well fed and I don't have any idea what happened. Either way it was pretty gross (little rats looking at me with red eyes and blood spattered faces) so I think I might stick with buying frozen from the local pet shop.

Oh I forgot if there is anyone in the East Gippsland area who wants a free adult male rat PM me. The pet shop doesn't want him back and my darwin couldn't handle such a large meal.

RE: Cannibal Feeders

I'd say she has died and to show their complete respect they ate her.

It happens! If one dies the others will eat it.

RE: Cannibal Feeders

I knew that the males can eat the babies and such but I never expected the babies to eat the female, especially since she was looking fine when I went to bed last night.

Yeah, that happens, make sure you kill all involve now though as once they have tasted blood, they are useless. Kill the now, freeze them for at lease 6 weeks as you dont know what the mum die of, then feed em to your snakeys, **** happens, but you are still way better off breeding them yourself if you have 3 or more snakes, the savings are unbelievable.

I had an adult female that was looking a bit dopey, the next day I found her dead with a 1cm diameter hole deep into her chest cavity.
Sixth sense maybe?

What do you mean they will become 'useless' after eating the mother? Do they get a taste for blood and turn into murderous mice and start killing live siblings?

Sounds scary. . .psycho mice :S

Too much effort breeding them, i like them dead and frozen
Speaking of mice. . .a wild one just ran under my dish washer ! First mouse we've had
