What's a pulse proportional thermostat? The Herpshop site says that their basic wall thermostats are suitable to use with ceramic heat emitters?

A pulse proprtional turns the power on/off when it reaches the desired temp set where as a dimmer turns the power down hence less power usage. The dimmer reduces the hot and cold effect given to the element(in this case) which gives you longer life and a more consistant heat.
A ceramics life span on a dimmer is a recommended 25000hrs.

Cheers Rob

a pulse thermostat sends smalll pulses of power all the time it just changes how long between the pulses of electricity to keep the constant temp (hence why it is not used for incandesant bulbs its like switching the lights in your house off and on continuasly and globes will blow very quick like this

Even a on off stat will make a globe last alot longer than a pulse thermostat would

Thermostats in 3 sentances
1 Dimming thermostat are versatile and can be used for everything.
2 Pulse thermostats are for heat mats and ceramics
3 On/Off everything but bulbs will not last as long with these thermostats as they will with dimming.

Have a look at the Herp Shop on their Thermostat page. It explains in detail the differences between the thermostats, how they work and what each one is suited to.
