Does anyone know how long the compact flouro UV lights URS and Animal Attraction sell last before they stop giving off effective UVB?
Also, if you were using on for UVB for a beardie in a 2-foot tall enclosure, what strength would you need, a 5 or 10?
Ta!

Don't use them, but I've been told 6months, don't have anything to back that up though.

bob, they have a recomended lifespan of 2000 hours, so, if you had them on for 8 hours a day, it would last 250 days or just over 8 months. However, that is a conservative figure, as is done with most UV globes. We are currently running a Compact Max Pack 10.0 and are monitoring the UVB output, at the moment they put out a great amount of UVB, the only thing better would be an Ozbright. The 10.0 would be good for a dragon in an enclosure that size, especially with the reflector as it concentrates the UVB downward for greater effectiveness.
Where are you located bobthefish?
Cheers
Daz

Daz- I'm in NE Victoria. I'd be very comfortable just having an outdoor enclosure, but it gets very cold here.

LOL, Yes, a bit chilly down that way. Deinately need an inside source of UVB for winter down that way, you could probably get away with them being outside through summer though.

Bob, my beardies get no artificial UVB there kept indoors as I'm in vic as well. I give them plenty of calcium powder and take them out in the sun when the weather permits. Which isn't to often at the moment, and they are fine.
Ive done the same with EWD's for many years, and they dont even go outside as i wouldn't see them again, and there some of the biggest healthies EWD's I have ever seen. With no bone probs to speak off.

If you supply calcium and no UVB, you will end up with calcium deposits in the body. You need UVB to synthesise it into vitamin D3 for bone strength etc. You will not see bone problems until they are so week they start breaking limbs and then it may be too late. If you want to see the effects of not giving them calcium and UVB, then go and have them X-Rayed as this will show you the density of the bone structure. There is a noticeable difference between animals that have had Calcium and UVB and those that haven't.

For the amount of electricity they give off, and the fact there is no cost difference, always get 10.0
i would also change which ever bulb you get about every 6mths as they reduce in the amount of U.V they give off.
