Exclamation Containers for freighting? - where are they?

Hello, I am trying to freight a couple of jungles from Upper Coomera (Brisbane) to Cairns, Now I have spoken to Jetpet and AAE but neither of them are able to tell me what sort of container i'm allowed or where to get it from. These snakes in question are less then 1kg in weight only hatchlings and the closest thing I got for an answer from Jetpet was a small cat carrier - which to me is miles to big and unsafe... and is there a road service??. I have read all the other threads here and none seem to answer my questions.... please help me!!

Hi Angel,

This is what was used to freight some bredli recently, made from ply and they were sent via AAE with no problems. They were put inside a pillow case, before put into the box, with the lid screwed closed.

Sure did, just plywood from Bunnings, or any hardware store, the floor and lid are about half a cm thick and the walls of the box about 1cm, (you need a bit of thickness to get the screws into). Then just drill a few holes in the side to let some air in.

You can buy off the shelf plastic boxes of various sizes. With airfreight charges are based on weight or volume whichever is the greater so there is incentive to minimise both. Always bag the snakes inside the container so that incase the container gets broken the snakes are still contained. Locate air holes so that freight stickers wont cover them.

They're pretty easy to knock up, just make sure you cut the timber at right angles, so it is all square when you put it together.

You don't want them much bigger than the snake, that box had two 3 month old bredlis in it, each in its own pillow case, so it was a pretty snug fit. The snake will feel more secure this way, rather than in a bigger box, where it can't feel the sides around it and the pillow cases help with this.

Pity you're in Cairns, could drop one over for you. But as I said they're dead easy to make.

Good luck.

I think the snakes are coming from Brisbane not Cairns.

Yeah, that's what I initially thought, but then I saw Angel's location is Cairns.

Small styrofoam eskies that carry a 6-pack.
Cost approximately $7 from any Coles or Woolworths store.

No, it's not...Brisbane to Cairns is a long trip and if you are the only delivery it will cost a packet...

I use 'Sistema' type tubs to freight small reptiles - you can get them from Woolworths and they are VERY sturdy plastic tubs...

I use Sistema plastic containers to freight my geckos. I put my geckos in individual takeaway containers lined with damp paper towel, and then I use heaps of packing tape to strap the lid on. For snakes I'm guessing it would be wiser to bag them first.

The containers are usually about $7 each from Biw W, but I bought mine on sale, 5 for $15. I bought a cheapie $5 soldering iron from Dick Smith to melt lots of ventilation holes in it.

The container, 4x takeaway tubs, 4xbaby geckos and shredded paper usually comes to just under a kg, and has never been questioned by AAE Brisbane.

Cheers
Carolyn
