Just wondering about everyones methods of cooling.
Night time temps, day time temps?
Male? Female?
length of cooling? Weeks or month or two?
I'm using red spot lamps.
Mainly for BHP & Carpets
Thanks

My cooling temps for BHP's are gradual. My BHP's stop feeding in late April and begin the cooling process from May. The key is hot days, cool nights.
I have a basking spot (not ambient temp) around 30 in the day at all times and at night the temps are gradually reduced down to as low as 15 c at the hot end at night in July. I've modelled my cooling regime's for my animals from BOM data for the region my animals originate (when known).
I also reduce day length from 14hrs day 10hrs night gradually down to 8hrs day 16hrs night in July.
Everyone has there own method, anything from in cage heating, to room heating only at night, to hot and cold ends provided at all times with a divide.
The important thing to know is the signs to look for in your snake, and that you animals are prepared well.
Refer to the feeding in winter thread for the differing techniques that people use.

I have been cooling my male DP since mid May, gradually lowering night time temps and shortening daytime/basking hours (but not the basking temp 29-31). In June i just pulled the plug at night time and it would regularly drop to 15-18C. Continued this throughout July making sure for at least 6-8 hours a day he would have suitable basking temps 26-30C.
Now i am gradually lengthening basking hours coming into mid August 8-10 hours at least now, I let night temps drop as low as 18-20C still. In another week or so my 2y.o DP would have 3 months of brumation (his 1st year of cooling in fact). He has still been rather active whilst cooling, whether from looking for a warmer place or being uncomfortable i really can't say... Mid August i'm just gunna turn it all back on as it was-29-31 day temps and 27-29 night temps.
I was really hesitant about cooling, i was told a DP doesn't need it unless you want to breed them but another source which made sense indicated that 'cooling' is natural to a python and they are better off for it.
Here is a pic of my DP brumating in his few glorious basking hours...

You have to be careful with the method of cooling where the temps are really low at night and normal at day time. This can mean that gut bateria can florish in the warmer day time temps. It is better to give your snake a final feed in say April and let it fully digest, then when they are clear of any food gradually lower the temps for day and night to eventually housing your snake in no heat at all, like in your garage. Well that's for Diamonds anyway. I haven't tried it yet, it is just what I have read and I haven't been game to cool to that extent.
